Redear Sunfish Fishing: Shellcracker Habits and Gear
A practical open-water guide to redear sunfish. Gear ranges are starting points; match printed rod ratings, bait size, fish size and local rules.
Where to find redear sunfish
Redear sunfish favor warm ponds and lakes, often around vegetation, gravel and firmer bottom. They may feed deeper than bluegill and form spawning beds in somewhat deeper water.
What do they eat?
Their diet includes snails and other bottom invertebrates, earning the name shellcracker. A small worm or other legal bait near bottom often makes more sense than a bait suspended too high.
When and how do they spawn?
Redear spawn in late spring and early summer in colonies of saucer-shaped nests, often deeper than other sunfish. Timing follows local water temperature.
