Muskellunge Fishing: Habitat, Prey, Spawning and Gear
A practical open-water guide to muskellunge. Gear ranges are starting points; match printed rod ratings, bait size, fish size and local rules.
Where to find muskellunge
Muskies use weed edges, points, reefs and nearby open water in lakes and rivers. Search places where large prey can cross an ambush route; depth and location shift with temperature and season.
What do they eat?
Muskellunge are predators of fish and other available prey. Large bucktails, jerkbaits, swimbaits or topwater lures can be appropriate, but lure weight must stay within rod ratings.
When and how do they spawn?
Muskellunge spawn in spring. Spawning habitat differs among waters: Minnesota research found offshore chara beds at Leech Lake, so a blanket claim that they all spawn in shallow weeds is misleading.
Rod, reel, line and hook starting points
| Part | Starting point |
