Lake Sturgeon Fishing: Habitat, Diet, Spawning and Gear
A practical open-water guide to lake sturgeon. Gear ranges are starting points; match printed rod ratings, bait size, fish size and local rules.
Where to find lake sturgeon
Lake sturgeon move through large rivers and lakes, often over sand, gravel and rubble. They forage close to the bottom and may travel long distances between feeding and spawning habitat. Check whether targeted fishing is open on your water before rigging.
What do they eat?
Their downward-facing mouth and barbels help locate bottom invertebrates, snails, mussels and occasional small fish. Where legal, a compact bundle of nightcrawlers on a bottom rig is a common angling presentation.
When and how do they spawn?
Lake sturgeon migrate to spawn in spring, often over rock in flowing water. Females mature slowly and spawn only every several years, making local protections particularly important.
