Flathead Catfish Fishing: Habitat, Live Bait and Gear
A practical open-water guide to flathead catfish. Gear ranges are starting points; match printed rod ratings, bait size, fish size and local rules.
Where to find flathead catfish
Large, slow rivers hold flatheads near logjams, undercut banks, deep holes and cover beside current. Set up where a fish can leave cover to feed, accounting for snags and changing river levels.
What do they eat?
Unlike many catfish, larger flatheads primarily hunt live fish. Use a legal live baitfish where permitted, matched to a suitable hook and strong tackle; local bait collection and transport rules matter.
When and how do they spawn?
Flatheads nest in cavities during late spring and summer as water warms. The male guards eggs and young. Avoid assuming a channel catfish bait plan fits this species.
Rod, reel, line and hook starting points
| Part | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Rod | 7–9 ft heavy rod with enough backbone to steer fish from cover |
| Reel | Strong conventional or large spinning reel with reliable drag |
| Line | 30–65 lb line plus abrasion-resistant leader, scaled to cover |
| Hook | Strong circle hook sized to legal live bait, often 6/0–10/0 for larger offerings |
Bait and lure choices
Legal live baitfish near cover on a secure bottom rig; monitor the rod.
