Blue Catfish Fishing: Habitat, Diet, Spawning and Gear
A practical open-water guide to blue catfish. Gear ranges are starting points; match printed rod ratings, bait size, fish size and local rules.
Where to find blue catfish
Large rivers and connected reservoirs offer current seams, channel edges and deeper holes. Blue catfish move with flow, season and forage, so start around structure and baitfish rather than assuming they stay on the deepest bottom.
What do they eat?
Blue catfish eat invertebrates and increasingly fish as they grow. Fresh cut shad or other legal local baitfish is a practical starting bait. Keep bait fresh and match its size to the fish expected.
When and how do they spawn?
Blue catfish nest in cavities in late spring or early summer as water warms. Their breeding resembles channel catfish, with males protecting eggs. Timing varies by region.
Rod, reel, line and hook starting points
| Part | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Rod | 7–8 ft medium-heavy to heavy rod, moderate or moderate-fast action |
| Reel | 4000–6000 spinning or conventional reel with adequate line capacity |
| Line | 20–40 lb mono or suitable braid and abrasion-resistant leader |
| Hook | Circle hook roughly 5/0–8/0 for larger cut bait; fit the actual bait and fish |
Bait and lure choices
Bottom rig with fresh legal cut fish; use enough sinker to hold in current.
